When Philips TV’s 2nd gen P5 equipped OLED TVs were launched eyebrows were raised with this come-back brand driven under-license by TP Vision offering some really top performing TVs in 2018 with the company’s 803 & 903 models winning more than 43 awards and two independent ‘blind’ picture shoot-outs.
New for Philips 2019 OLED TVs is a 3rd generation of the P5, implemented in a special two-chip arrangement that maintains the optimised order of processing of the original P5, but adds additional computational power to key intensive parts of the processing chain – to produce what the maker says is a 20% PQ improvement over the 2nd generation P5 chip.
Also new for 2019 is the inclusion of Dolby Vision, allowing Philips to offer all current forms of HDR functionality – HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision & HLG – across the entire TV range, from the new OLED sets to the latest 6000 Series.
The maker says Dolby Vision transforms the TV experience with ultra-vivid picture quality — incredible brightness, contrast, detail, and colour that bring entertainment to life. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver colours that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker.
The original Philips TV P5 engine was designed to analyse and individually address each of the Five Pillars that together define overall picture quality; source perfection, sharpness, colour, contrast and motion.
Third generation P5 brings improved noise reduction, sharpness and contrast to all sources, including PQ improvements for Philips unique Perfect Natural Reality feature, plus better HDR performance. The third generation P5 engine will bring outstanding PQ processing to both HDR10 & HDR10+ sources and, for the first time, to Dolby Vision enabled content, says their creator.
Excellent noise reduction performance has always been a key element within the P5’s processing suite, thanks to motion detection working in combination with spatial and temporal noise reduction to allow the maximum reduction of noise, but without introducing annoying detail blurring or smearing.
The 3rd generation of Philips TV’s P5 adds de-contour enhancement, bit-depth calculation and sparse filtering to produce an cleaner, sharper image.

Staying sharp
For sharpness performance, the original P5’s Detail Enhancer feature has been further improved by adding a Detail Protection and Restoration function to the original Detail Meter, to ensure better results when transforming the original pixels into better, sharper pixels. A new Dejaggy filter is also said to be especially effective when applied to low and high angle diagonal lines.
The result is a visibly more refined image with finer lines and deeper details to create an impression of more image depth.
Contrast, and in
particular the unique Perfect Natural Reality feature, has also been improved
by a new specular detection function plus better region classification and skin
tone protection in conjunction with inverse tone mapping. The result is a more
realistic
image with deeper details, which again create more depth impression and help to
transform SDR content into an HDR-like picture.
The new and upgraded features can also combine to improve HDR10/HDR10+ performance.
For HDR content the 3rd gen P5 removes the problem of loss of detail in very dark areas, ensures there’s no colour clipping in very bright and colourful scenes and removes any unwanted banding or gradients on skin tones.
TP Vision says the Philips TV PQ team has worked in close partnership with Dolby to enable the key benefits of P5 to deliver a spectacular viewing experience while retaining artistic intent.
The 3rd generation P5 can also improve SDR and HDR 10/HDR10+ images with less noise, artefacts with picture quality that is both sharper and smoother.
