With virtual reality set to become mainstream in the next few years, companies such as Disney are jumping on-board to ensure they stay ahead of the curve.
At the recent Oculus Connect developer conference, it was announced that Disney will be bringing VR experiences based on some of its famous characters to the Oculus Rift, while exclusive VR content for fans of the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 film has been promised.
While little has been revealed about what these VR experience entail, Disney has been toying with bringing to life some of its famous characters for a while. The company is already working with Magic Leap to bring C-3PO and R2D2 to life in mixed reality, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility to think something similar is happening in partnership with Oculus.
As for Blade Runner 2049, Oculus has already revealed what users should expect – as the film promises to push the boundaries of VR further than ever. The film will supposedly be exclusively distributed with bonus VR experiences from Oculus – and with the film taking part in the future, it’s easy to imagine what sort of experiences are being planned.
Alcon Interactive, a subsidiary of film studio Alcon Entertainment, is working on the VR experiences for Blade Runner 2049 and represents the first VR content from the studio.
Blade Runner 2049 is to be released in cinemas in October 2017, so it’s likely that Ridley Scott and co will have more information nearer the time.
