Projector enclosures do an excellent job of concealing equipment and reducing fan noise, but they also create a challenge of their own: heat. Once a projector is operating inside a sealed or acoustically lined enclosure, the heat it generates has nowhere to escape unless the enclosure is actively managed. This is exactly the problem the Mistral System from Display Technologies, part of the SRND Group, is designed to solve, and understanding how it works can help installers specify projector enclosures with greater confidence.
The setup: a Hushbox with two fans
At the heart of the system is the Hushbox, an acoustic enclosure that houses the projector. Two Mistral Fans are fitted to the enclosure, one serving as an intake and the other as an exhaust. Both connect to the Mistral Commander, which acts as the intelligence behind the system.
Heat builds as soon as the projector starts
The moment the projector powers up, the temperature inside the Hushbox begins to rise. Left unmanaged, this can exceed the projector’s ideal operating range, potentially affecting lamp life, image quality and the long-term reliability of the equipment.
The Commander constantly monitors temperature
The Mistral Commander continuously measures the internal temperature of the enclosure using its built-in sensor. This gives the system an accurate, real-time picture of the conditions inside the Hushbox.
A target temperature is programmed in
Installers can programme the Commander with a preferred operating temperature, with 27°C set as the default. This becomes the target the system works to maintain.
Fan speed adjusts automatically
Rather than operating at a fixed speed, the Mistral Fans are controlled directly by the Commander. As the internal temperature moves above or below the target, fan speed is automatically increased or reduced to compensate, drawing in cooler ambient air while expelling the warmer air building up inside the enclosure.
Each fan is controlled independently
A particularly useful feature is that the Commander does not simply operate both fans together. Each fan can be monitored and controlled independently, allowing installers to create positive or negative pressure configurations where the intake and exhaust need to behave differently instead of simply mirroring one another.
Adjustments are smooth and gradual
Rather than jumping abruptly between fan speeds, the Commander makes continuous, incremental adjustments. This keeps the enclosure at the desired temperature while avoiding sudden changes in fan noise, resulting in quieter and more consistent operation.
Silence when cooling is no longer needed
Once the target temperature has been reached, the Commander switches the fans off completely. With no unnecessary airflow, the enclosure becomes effectively silent, an important advantage in home cinemas, boardrooms and screening rooms where background noise can detract from the viewing experience.
