SRND Group: Dynamic Masking Screens

Precision framing dynamic masking screens that work for installers and end users alike available from the SRND Group.

For AV installers designing home cinema and media room solutions, few components influence the finished result as much as the screen itself. Display Technologies‘ Dynamic range of masking projector screens has been built to solve one of the industry’s oldest challenges: how to present multiple aspect ratios – cinemascope, widescreen and 4:3 legacy content – on a single screen without black bars or wasted image area.

The Dynamic range spans several configurations to suit different rooms and budgets. The Dynamic-2S offers two-way motorised side masking, ideal for adjusting width while maintaining a fixed height. The Dynamic-2TB does the reverse, with two-way motorised top and bottom masking. For installations requiring maximum flexibility, the Dynamic-4 combines both, delivering four-way motorised masking across a variable aspect ratio range of 1.33:1 to 2.40:1, comfortably covering everything from standard broadcast content to full cinemascope.

Each model is also available in Large (L) and Extra Large (XL) variants for wider screen widths, from just under 510cm to more than 690cm, ensuring installers do not have to compromise on screen size in larger cinema rooms.

What sets the Dynamic range apart technically is Mask Position Logic (MPL), a proprietary control system developed in-house by DT Screens. Instead of relying on a limited number of pre-programmed masking presets – the traditional and often clunky approach – MPL calculates the exact mask position required for any requested aspect ratio within the screen’s supported range on the fly.

For installers, this removes a fiddly commissioning step and eliminates a common source of callbacks when a client requests an aspect ratio that was not included in the original preset list. For end users, it means the screen simply adapts to whatever content is playing, with no manual reconfiguration required.

Every Dynamic screen can be manufactured to the exact size and aspect ratio a project requires, rather than being limited to a handful of standard dimensions. This provides a genuine advantage when working around bespoke joinery, acoustic panelling or awkward room proportions.

Installation has also been carefully considered from the installer’s perspective. The Dynamic-4, for example, uses front image surface fitting, allowing the frame to be mounted first and the image surface installed afterwards. This reduces on-site handling risk and speeds up final installation.

Control is equally straightforward. IP and RS232 connectivity come as standard across the range, allowing simple integration with popular control systems without the need for third-party modules or workarounds, an important advantage when commissioning a project to a tight schedule.

Whispertec motor technology, operating at around 30dB, keeps masking movement almost inaudible. This is a significant benefit in dedicated cinema rooms, where mechanical noise during a masking transition can distract from the viewing experience.

For the end user, it means the screen adjusts itself quietly between different content formats, reinforcing the feel of a considered, premium installation rather than drawing attention to the mechanics behind it.

Taken together, the Dynamic range gives installers a solution that is flexible in size, straightforward to commission thanks to MPL, easy to integrate into existing control ecosystems and quiet enough to disappear into a finished room. For end users, the result is a screen that frames every piece of content correctly, without compromising image size or requiring any manual intervention – exactly what a well-specified premium home cinema should deliver.
