Sonos Amp Multi represents the company’s biggest commitment yet to the professional custom installation market, says the maker. Any dealer who completes the training through the Sonos Partner Portal and Sonos Academy will be able to specify the new platform.
Sonos underlines it has developed a new platform built around the needs of professional installers, combining greater performance, flexibility and scalability.
At the heart of Amp Multi are eight amplified outputs delivering 125W per channel, capable of supporting up to four configurable audio zones. Every output can be assigned to any zone, giving installers freedom when designing systems.
That flexibility extends beyond a single amplifier. Additional Amp Multi units can simply be added to increase system capacity, allowing installations to grow alongside client requirements without changing the overall operating platform.
The new amplifier has also been engineered to drive demanding speaker layouts. Each output can power up to three Sonos Architectural speakers, making the platform suitable for larger entertaining spaces, outdoor areas and expansive open-plan environments where multiple loudspeakers are often required to achieve even coverage.
Performance has received equal attention. Amp Multi uses an advanced gallium nitride (GaN) power architecture combined with Class-D post-filter feedback, delivering high efficiency alongside clean, controlled audio reproduction. The improved efficiency also brings practical installation benefits, generating minimal heat. As a result, Amp Multi operates without cooling fans, relying instead on passive convection cooling. For installers, that means silent operation inside equipment racks, improved long-term reliability and simplified rack ventilation.
Rack installation itself has been designed with professional workflows in mind. The amplifier occupies a compact 1.5U chassis and can be paired with a purpose-designed 2U rack mount that automatically provides the correct ventilation spacing above and below each unit without requiring additional vent panels. A flat rear section and recessed connectors also allow the amplifier to stand upright during installation, simplifying cable termination before the unit is secured into the rack.
Commissioning
One of the most welcome additions is a streamlined commissioning process free of manually identifying individual amplifiers via serial numbers or PIN codes. Instead installers can trigger an audible chirp from the Sonos app to identify each unit in the rack. Front and rear LEDs further assist during setup, while smart default settings help reduce commissioning time.
Once installed, Amp Multi introduces significantly deeper system optimisation through ProTune, giving installers access to a suite of professional adjustment tools. These include a 10-band parametric EQ, gain adjustment, delay offset and width control, allowing systems to be tuned precisely for individual room acoustics and loudspeaker placement. When used with Sonos Architectural speakers, Optimise Sonos Speakers provides dedicated DSP profiles designed to maximise performance.
This combination of professional tuning tools and Sonos’ user interface is one of the product’s biggest strengths. Installers retain detailed control over system performance while homeowners continue to benefit from the Sonos experience they already know.
Sonos is also keen to underline this is the most extensively researched product in the company’s history. Development involved more than 160 hours of active research with over 1,300 participants, including almost 800 professional integrators. More than 1,000 detailed conversations with dealers and customers helped shape virtually every aspect of the finished product.
That research identified four clear priorities: faster installation, quicker setup, professional tuning capabilities and improved thermal management. Rather than simply validating existing ideas, Sonos says those conversations directly influenced the final hardware and software design, from rack mounting and packaging to flexible zone assignment and PIN-free setup. The result is a product that has effectively been designed alongside the channel rather than simply for it.
Sonos clearly sees Amp Multi as more than another amplifier. It represents a significant expansion of the company’s commitment to custom installation, demonstrating a willingness to develop products specifically around professional workflows while maintaining compatibility with the wider Sonos ecosystem, leading streaming services and major third-party control platforms.
For existing Sonos dealers, the opportunity is equally significant. The company is positioning Amp Multi as the next evolution of professional whole-home audio, capable of supporting larger, more sophisticated residential projects while reducing installation time and ongoing complexity.
With certification available through the Sonos Partner Portal and Sonos Academy, trained dealers will be well placed to take advantage of what could prove to be one of the most important custom installation launches from Sonos in recent years.
