Panamorph is already confident that users will fall in love with the ultra-wide aspect ratio of 2.4:1 provided by its Paladin and Phoenix lenses, but in order to convince the last few remaining people sitting on the fence the company has released a video to show off all the benefits.
In the video Panamorph’s very own Shawn Kelly explains the benefits of the Paladin and Phoenix lenses, as well as noting that users looking for the commercial cinema experience at home should really be enjoying films in the ultra-wide aspect ratio – especially given 70% of all new film releases utilise it.
As Panamorph’s Shawn Kelly explains in a new video release, the Ultra-Wide commercial cinema format of 2.4:1 is much wider than the 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio of 4K/UHDTV and HDTV standards. This means that in order to view Ultra-Wide on a 16:9 screen it must be ‘letterboxed’ by two black bars, created by turning off approx. 25% of the display device’s resolution while trapping 25% of the light and converting it to heat. Effectively consumers are getting 3K performance from a 16:9 4K UHD display.

Panamorph has worked directly with home theatre projector manufacturers for over 10 years, so that today every leading projector model can be converted to the full cinema UltraWide 2.4:1 aspect ratio using a Panamorph lens. In the process over two million pixels are reclaimed for a 4K UHD picture, which means higher brightness and higher definition from the display device. By avoiding unnecessary light loss and black bars, Panamorph’s new Paladin and Phoenix Ultra-Wide lenses promise to improve the visual performance of the entire home theatre investment by over 30%.
In addition to the performance advantages, Shawn believes that a further benefit of the upgrade from 16:9 to Ultra-Wide 2.4:1 is the practicality of being able to install a 2.4:1 screen within the height dimension of a UK room: a 16:9 screen with the same width would be through the ceiling, he claims.
The Paladin (8K-ready) and Phoenix (4K-ready) 2.4:1 Panamorph Ultra-Wide lenses are available now from Habitech in the UK.
