Unveiled at ISE 2026, DoorBird’s D31TDV 5G and D31TDH 5G IP Video Door Stations are entering regular distribution, offering integrated cellular connectivity without the need for network cabling.

DoorBird has begun regular shipments of its D31x range with integrated 5G connectivity, following the technology’s debut at ISE 2026 in Barcelona.

The D31TDV 5G and D31TDH 5G were introduced at the beginning of the year as what DoorBird describes as the world’s first IP Video Door Stations with integrated 5G technology. Following selected pilot projects and completion of international certification, the products are now available as standard models across the EMEIA region, with US availability expected shortly.

A key attraction for integrators is the ability to deploy an IP video door station without installing network cabling. The D31x 5G requires only a power supply, with internet connectivity provided over cellular networks.

This could prove particularly useful when upgrading existing buildings where installing new data cabling would be difficult, disruptive or expensive. Where residents use the DoorBird App rather than hard-wired indoor stations, existing intercom wiring can potentially be repurposed to provide power.

The result is the ability to introduce digital access management, remote administration and video and audio communication alongside RFID, QR code and smartphone access without the infrastructure normally required for an IP-based system.

DoorBird is supplying the D31x 5G models with a pre-installed SIM card as standard. International cellular and service agreements enable operation in more than 200 countries and regions, with the system automatically connecting to the best available mobile network.

Integrated 4G and 5G connectivity is designed to simplify commissioning and reduce configuration, installation and planning requirements for integrators and operators.

The cellular connection does not have to be the sole means of communication. The D31x can alternatively connect via LAN and Power over Ethernet, with cellular connectivity used as a failover option.

Designed for multi-tenant residential developments, commercial properties and larger building complexes, the D31x platform can support installations with up to 3,000 units.

Owners, operators and property managers can administer names, permissions and access credentials remotely through a web browser or app. Lost transponders can be deactivated, resident information updated and access rights changed without requiring a site visit, while logging and video functions provide additional visibility over building access.

Residents can open doors using a smartphone and see and speak to visitors remotely, while accessibility features are designed to make the system suitable for a wider range of users.

For integrators, the significance of the 5G models goes beyond simply adding another connectivity option. Removing the requirement to bring Ethernet to the entrance could make IP door entry viable in retrofit projects where the cost and disruption associated with new cabling has previously been a barrier, while the option to retain LAN connectivity with cellular failover provides another approach for projects where resilience is a priority.

Clearly the most interesting aspect of the D31x 5G is what it says about the changing possibilities for retrofit. Bringing power to an entrance is generally a very different proposition from finding a practical route for new network cabling through a finished building, particularly in older properties, apartment developments and heritage environments.

Removing the networking cable requirement could therefore open up projects where upgrading to IP door entry might previously have been considered too disruptive or expensive.

There is also an interesting resilience argument. On projects where wired networking is available, the ability to use cellular connectivity as a failover creates another layer of redundancy for a system that sits at a critical point in the building. As smart home and building technology increasingly moves towards IP, giving integrators more than one way to establish and maintain that connection is likely to become increasingly valuable.
