Musical Fidelity has launched the M5xi and M6xi integrated amplifiers, the latest evolution in its M-Series range of hi-fi electronics. Building on the success of their respective predecessors, each model combines high-end engineering with modern connectivity.
Designed to elevate the performance of hi-fi systems at different price points, both the M5xi and M6xi integrated amplifiers eschew built-in streaming technology, focusing instead on engineering and sound performance.
The M5xi is a true high-end amplifier, built to combine modern wired connectivity with class-leading sound quality. The advanced technology on offer is bettered only by the higher-power M6xi integrated amplifier.
The M5xi is built around a completely new amplifier topology, derived from the Musical Fidelity TITAN power amplifier. Configured internally as two independent mono power amps, with a separate pre-amp, the model employs a low-distortion Darlington output stage. By using premium components throughout the signal path, this design ensures stability and musical control up-to 160W per-channel (240W at 4Ω).
In fact, great attention has been given to the entire internal layout. The main transformer and power supply PCB are now encapsulated within a metal enclosure, further reducing electromagnetic interference inside the chassis. Similarly, the carefully optimised PCB board design minimises circuit imbalances that would otherwise require corrective feedback, allowing the amplifier to operate more naturally and transparently. During operation, all power supplies remain purely analogue, reducing high-frequency noise and minimising EMC-related interference. The result is a cleaner signal path and improved overall sonic purity.
The preamplifier stage of the M5xi is fully analogue, to maintain signal integrity. Its low-noise circuit design supports a wide dynamic range, meaning that whether someone is listening quietly or at full scale, micro-details and harmonic accuracy remain the same. The Burr-Brown stepped attenuator used for the volume control guarantees precise channel matching and a stable soundstage throughout the volume curve.
The M5xi features a high-quality MM/MC phono stage with enhanced internal isolation and shielding. There are also separate digital boards used internally to support the expanded connectivity on offer. With HDMI eARC, optical, coaxial and USB-C digital inputs available, alongside four RCA line inputs, a Home Theatre Bypass input, a line output and a pre output, there’s very little this amplifier cannot support.
The additional RS232 input means even sophisticated custom install systems are easy to work with and the 5V/2A USB A power output is available for powering compact streamers you may wish to connect to your system.
The M5xi is a sophisticated electrical device, housed in a heavy chassis and is operated by the clearly labelled and tactile controls on the front panel, or using the new M-Series system remote.
The M6xi, meanwhile, is the latest model to hold Musical Fidelity’s ‘M6’ moniker. Configured internally as two independent mono power amps, with a separate pre-amp, the model employs a low-distortion Darlington output stage. By using premium components throughout the signal path, this design ensures stability up-to 220W per-channel (320W at 4Ω).
The design incorporates a metal enclosure around the main transformer and power supply PCB, reducing electromagnetic interference within the chassis. The PCB layout has also been optimised to minimise circuit imbalances, limiting the need for corrective feedback and supporting a more natural signal path. During operation, the power supplies remain fully analogue, helping to reduce high-frequency noise and EMC-related interference.
The preamplifier stage is fully analogue, with a low-noise circuit design that enables a wide dynamic range. Volume control is managed using a Burr-Brown stepped attenuator, providing accurate channel matching and consistent performance across the volume range.
The unit includes an MM/MC phono stage with enhanced internal isolation and shielding. Separate internal digital boards support a wide range of connectivity options, including HDMI eARC, optical, coaxial and USB-C inputs, as well as four RCA line inputs, a balanced XLR input, a Home Theatre Bypass input, a line output and a pre output. Additional features include an RS232 input for integration into custom installation systems and a 5V/2A USB-A output for powering external streaming devices.
Operation is designed to be straightforward, with control available via the front panel interface or the supplied M-Series system remote.
Both are available with Silver or Black faceplate for the following prices:
M5xi: £2,099.00 (SRP)
M6xi: £2,699.00 (SRP)
