Chromecast Ultra Adds Dolby Vision, 4K UHD Support

Chromecast Ultra Adds Dolby Vision, 4K UHD Support

Google’s Chromecast has made it super easy to share videos directly from a smartphone or tablet directly with a TV – but it’s always had limitations, one of which was its lack of support for 4K UHD content. Now that’s no longer an issue, as the company has announced the Chromecast Ultra – its most powerful Chromecast yet.

Boasting support for 4K UHD content and High Dynamic Range (HDR), including Dolby Vision, users will now be able to share content from Netflix, YouTube and Vudu in the highest quality available. A supported 4K/HDR TV will be needed to get the most from the Ultra.

Google says that at first, users will be able to stream 4K content from Netflix, YouTube and Vudu, but it’s working to bring more 4K and HDR content on board. Later this year, Google Play Movies & TV will be rolling out 4K content. If the TV isn’t 4K-ready, Chromecast Ultra automatically optimises to that TV’s picture.

Chromecast has always relied on wirelessly casting content. It’s also relied on a WiFi connection to facilitate that, but with the Chromecast Ultra that’s no longer the case. While users can still choose to connect to a WiFi network, and are encouraged to do so thanks to major WiFi improvements, there’s now the option of connecting the Chromecast Ultra directly to the router using an Ethernet cable. Google says that with improved WiFi support, the addition of an Ethernet port and upgraded hardware, the Chromecast Ultra is capable of loading 1.8 times faster than other Chromecast devices.

The Chromecast Ultra will be available in November and will cost £69 in the UK. The device can be purchased from Google directly, Currys PC World and Argos.
