Understanding The Benefits and Common Barriers of AV over CAT type installations: Nick Bovill, European technical and training manager for CYP.

CYP Europe is positioned at the forefront of the world of AV distribution, not only developing and manufacturing ground breaking technologies, but also standing side-by-side with the installer, distributor and manufacturers alike such as; Valens, LG and Samsung. Using its considerable technical knowledge, CYP assists the market to help it understand and troubleshoot pioneering technologies such as HDBaseT and now AV over IP.

This 45 minute seminar will look into the leading types of AV over CAT based technologies, identify the benefits and common barriers and how they relate to such topics as UHD, HDR, HFR, CSC, EDID, HDCP and cabling. Nick has over 18 years’ experience in AV. As well as developing and delivering all training programs, he manages the technical on goings which include the majority of site visitations across Europe. He particularly enjoys working on the front line alongside the installer, dealing with their more common and complex issues.  This experience makes him ideally placed to give real-world feedback of everyday AV distribution issues and solutions.

The future of audio and home cinema: Wilfried Van Baelen, CEO at Auro Technologies, Inventor of Auro 3D

Difficult to sum up the career of this man in just a few words, however suffice to say there are few people on the planet who understand audio better than Wilfried.

In 1980 he co-founded Galaxy Studios Belgium eventually building one of the most technically advanced and inspiring recording studios in the world. Wilfried has also helped deliver the next generation of cinema audio with the creation of Auro 3D.

A professional musician, producer/engineer in music and film, Wilfried says his current main mission is to deliver the last dimension in sound (Height) to the world, the final step in the dimensional evolution of sound, started in 1870 by Edison. With Auro-3D, Wilfried says the industry is coming very close to the illusion of a natural sound field around the listener.

Inventing the Auro 3D in 2005, Wilfried founded Auro Technologies in 2009 to promote the format. Come and hear what Wilfried has to say about the future of audio and home cinema.

Simon Honywill, Sonic educationalist and senior sound consultant, Glastonbury Festival, Pyramid Stage

As well as being ultimately responsible for one of the most high-profile live music stages on Earth, and enjoying a 38 year long and varied career as a live sound engineer working with the likes of Goldfrap, and being involved with events such as the closing ceremony for the London 2012 Paralympics, Simon loves to educate others on how sound actually works and how to get the best from it. Simon will help visitors get the best from their projects, by gaining a better understanding of what audio is and why it does what it does.

Simon says, “Sound is undoubtedly the primary human sense, and it is a source of constant frustration to me that it is so often overlooked, side-lined and compromised.

“I believe that the world could be a better place if people were better equipped to make sense of the sonic environment in which they live and were prepared to think about sound in the same way they might about sight.”

How to make margin from service: Bruno Napoli

Installer and co-founder of Krika remote monitoring products, Bruno’s talk will focus on the evolution of our industry and how we must move from making margin on boxes to making margin on service. The presentation will explain why it is vital to talk about services, support, maintenance and guarantees to clients before we talk about technology. Bruno will explain the differences between service, maintenance, support, technical delegations and all the options there are to charge for it. Bruno then explains how to design your own ideal document/contract/terms and conditions that will fit with your needs and you own type of clientele.

The electrician as the Ultimate Smart Installer: Julian Barkes

Julian Barkes is responsible for sales and marketing at BEMCO, one of the larger independent electrical wholesalers in the UK.

Aimed at electrical contractors looking to expand their skills set, Julian will argue the electrical contracting market has a fantastic opportunity to make up ground lost to the custom install world as satellite and AV installs are displaced by IoT devices and an ever-expanding choice of new products and systems. Today, a wider range of skill sets is needed to deliver fully automated and integrated system solutions.

A fundamental understanding of electricity and structured wiring is the key. Julian will argue the electrician is ideally placed to be the Ultimate Smart Installer:  A professional electrician / digital plumber / tech expert – all rolled in to one. This session will explain why.

Distributing 4K Video with HDR: Jeff Murray – AVProConnect

In today’s world of high-bandwidth 4K content including HDR colour, we are forced to find solutions to problems we didn’t even know we had. Almost all existing infrastructure is not ready for the 18Gbps bandwidth needed to distribute these video signals. In this session Jeff Murray (president of AVPro, distributed in the UK by Aldous Systems) will talk about the bumps in the road of distributing 4K with High Dynamic Range and Wide Colour Gamut, and what steps are needed to overcome the issues. Installers will learn about EDID’s and how they effect a signal from the source, learn about bandwidth and the restrictions it can cause, and how cabling and distance need to be managed more closely than ever.

EI Live! will take place at Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey, May 9-10, its free to attend and has thousands of commercial vehicle friendly parking spaces right outside (parking is also free). With so many distributors, brand, experts and colleagues attending, can you afford not to come?
