Jordan O'BrienMicrosoft’s BUILD developer conference last night may have been focused on the upcoming Windows 10 update, but the company also showcased how said update could power the automated homes of the future.
One company throwing its support behind Windows 10 is Insteon, the home automation platform already available on all Windows devices, iOS, Apple Watch and Android, just to name a few.
At Microsoft’s event last night Insteon announced that it will be building a universal Windows 10 App to run on all Windows devices, from Windows Phone to Hololens, as well as everything in between.
“Microsoft is pleased to work with Insteon to further bring the Internet of Things to life,” says Steven Guggenheimer, corporate vice president and chief evangelist at Microsoft.
“Insteon offers a great example of the kind of innovative and creative solutions that Microsoft’s platforms and technologies can empower through experiences that are more personal and productive.”
The Insteon App for Windows 10 will be one of the first universal applications available on the Windows Store, with the company aiming to release it to coincide with the launch of the operating system.
That’s not all Insteon had to share at Microsoft’s event however, with the company also revealing that its entire product line-up will be able to connect with the AllJoyn platform.
Existing Insteon users will not have access to the AllJoyn functionality, with support set to come alongside a new hub that the company promises is coming ‘soon’.
AllJoyn is an open-source ‘Internet of Things’ platform with the express aim of allowing a universal software framework to enable different types of devices to talk with each other, meaning your entire home automation system needn’t be with the same manufacturer.
