SME has introduced its latest turntables, the Model 8 and Model 35 – with the new Series Vi Tonearm.
Building on the legacy of the Model 6, the Model 8 features a 40% increase in mass and offers extreme stability and resonance control in its category, which improves stability and resonance control to elevate overall audio fidelity. The platter has been thickened to provide optimal stability and ensure precise tracking accuracy. Its improved speed control unit delivers precision and consistency, drawing on advanced technology from the Model 60.
Advanced adjustable feet reportedly offer superior levelling and isolation, maximising performance on any surface. Refined mounting boards are designed to minimise unwanted vibrations between the tonearm and the plinth, further enhancing sound quality. The output connections have been completely revamped, with redesigned phono and low-voltage input sockets that improve both durability and connectivity.
Gold-plated WBT RCA sockets ensure “superior signal conductivity”, contributing to a cleaner and more accurate sound. The SME 309 tonearm features a lightweight magnesium construction and a removable headshell, allowing for effortless cartridge changes. A new colour scheme is also available, offering a choice of three finishes: White, Midnight Blue, and SME Black.

Series Vi Tonearm
The “i” signifies improvement and is a major improvement over the Series V. The Series Vi tonearm is meticulously CNC machined from High-Density Polymer material, ensuring extreme precision, states the manufacturer.
This single-cut design is crafted with tight tolerances and adheres to the brand’s standards of quality control. The Vi tube features a circular cross-sectional shape. This design results in a very low resonance signature with better measured tonearm and pillar resonances, contributing to pure tonal fidelity.
Meanwhile, the Model 35 Turntable with the NEW Series Vi Tonearm is an evolution derived from the advancements achieved by the reference Flagship Model 60.
The Model 8 features a tri-column design with decoupled feet that incorporate multipoint isolation, significantly enhancing overall performance, says the maker. Its improved suspension system employs an advanced design with both vertical and horizontal control, ensuring stability during playback.
At the core of the turntable is an innovative main bearing that utilises a hydraulic damping system for smooth and quiet operation. The main chassis, sub-chassis and platter have all been acoustically enhanced to reduce unwanted resonance and improve sound clarity.
A sophisticated speed control system is powered by a state-of-the-art electronic controller and an AC motor, supported by a separate transformer derived from the flagship Model 60.
The SME Series VI tonearm is crafted from a high-density, high-rigidity non-metallic polymer resin, offering outstanding acoustical inertness for precise audio reproduction.
The Model 8 is available in a range of finishes. Standard options include Black and Silver Anodised, while special finishes are available in Midnight Blue and Gunmetal Anodised.
