Magico has announced the A3 2027 loudspeaker, a three-way, four-driver floorstanding design developed with the same measurement instruments that produced the brand’s M9.
In developing the A3 2027, Magico deployed the state-of-the-art measurement tools first used to create the M9 — the most ambitious loudspeaker the company has ever built.
A Laser Vibrometer measured the vibration of the cabinet panels and calculated the sound pressure levels they generated. With that data in hand, engineers could target bracing and damping precisely where the structure demanded it, and then verify that the intended result had genuinely been achieved rather than assumed.
A Near-Field Scanner (NFS) robot was used to optimise the A3’s acoustic output, performing multiple measurements across the entire 3D sphere surrounding the loudspeaker. The result is a complete view of on- and off-axis response, and a level of data and verification that pushes the A3 2027 closer to the optimal result than could be achieved with the original A3.
The A3 2027 incorporates constrained-layer damping (CLD) — a technique proven effective throughout the S Series — inside an enclosure whose bracing and bolt placement were structurally fine-tuned against measured data. Where a brace lands and where a bolt clamps proved to have a major effect on the noise a cabinet radiates. The manufacturer says the outcome is a dramatically quieter structure.
Seen in profile, the loudspeaker has no hard corners. Every vertical edge is radiused, the top plate rolls into the sides and the enclosure construction carries no visible fastener. The enclosure sits on a precision-machined base mirroring the same radiused geometry, supported by footers custom-designed for the A3 2027.
The A3 is also no longer a two-finish loudspeaker. Its cabinet panels are bead-blasted and anodised — a treatment that gives the aluminum a fine, even, satin texture and a finish integral to the metal itself rather than applied over it. Four colours are available: black, silver, red and blue.
The defining change from the previous A3’s drive units is the cone itself, realised through new manufacturing techniques that make this cone technology available for the first time in the A3. The midrange and woofer cones are built around aluminium-honeycomb cores offering ideal thickness, light weight and the ability to be formed into custom shapes — sandwiched between carbon-fibre skins.
Every drive unit in the A3 2027 is new. Each was designed, modeled, and built for this loudspeaker. The manufacturer claims that the tweeter achieves high-frequency reproduction unheard of at this price point. Its pure-beryllium diaphragm employs an optimised geometry with a 28mm dome diameter.
The motor system delivers low distortion along with greater power handling; a new neodymium-based motor was customised to the A3’s dynamic capability, with extra-long linear movement of the voice coil. Careful FEA modeling and the latest generation of damping materials further improve the acoustical performance of the back chamber.
The midrange is 5 inches in diameter and uses the latest Magico cone technology. It employs a newly formulated, long-life foam surround as part of its suspension mechanism for cone-to-surround integration, fast settling time and ultra-low distortion figures. A new motor system provides a stabilised magnetic field, a pure titanium voice coil and pure copper shorting rings to minimise eddy currents.
Bass comes from a pair of 7-inch units utilising the same new cone geometry as the midrange. Each employs a motor system with a super-stabilised magnetic field, a pure titanium voice coil and pure copper shorting rings to minimise eddy currents. The bass units were optimised for minimal music-related distortion across their passband in both the frequency and time domains, using state-of-the-art FEA simulation. Acoustic, mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal behavior were analyzed on a single platform.
The A3 2027’s three-way crossover is implemented as an acoustical-target 24dB Linkwitz-Riley slope, delivering maximum frequency and phase linearity while keeping intermodulation distortion minimal.
Driver resonances are controlled using Magico’s Elliptical Symmetry Crossover techniques and the network uses a full complement of state-of-the-art components from Mundorf EB GmbH of Cologne, Germany.
The Magico A3 2027 will begin shipping in the first quarter of 2027, engineered at Magico’s facility in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California.
Brought to the UK by Absolute Sounds – Magico’s exclusive UK distributor – the new speaker is priced at £28,998 per pair (inc. VAT).
