AliceFollowing the recent announcement that 4K Blu-rays have finally arrived in the UK as of April 11, the upcoming 30th anniversary release of the 1986 cult classic, Labyrinth starring David Bowie is coming to 4K UHD HDR Blu-ray disc through Amazon.com.
What can customers watch 4K UHD Blu-rays on?
The Panasonic DMP-UB900 4K Blu-ray player costs approximately £600, delivering high-quality 4K-resolution pictures with support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) and the BT.2020 wide colour gamut.
The UB900 features a new 4K High-Precision Chroma Processor equipped with imaging technologies such as chroma processing and high gradation processing that have been refined by the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) Blu-ray R&D facility.
The UB900 is equipped with an optimised, large-capacity power supply unit and features many select high-quality audio parts and components in its audio circuits, in addition to supporting high-resolution audio formats such as DSD and ALAC.
Panasonic also plans for the UB900 to support 4K VOD (Video on Demand) services, to give users greater enjoyment of 4K content.
Another option for consumers is Samsung’s UBD-K8500, which at £429.99 is almost £200 cheaper than Panasonic’s offering.
Key features include the ability to play the new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray standard, plus users will be able upscale their 1080p and conventional DVDs.
Samsung’s player is available in Currys, John Lewis, Richer Sounds and from Samsung itself.
For custom installers, AWE Europe in the UK offers both the Samsung’s UBD-K8500 and the Panasonic UB900.
Labyrinth is amongst a growing collection of older movies to also hit the digital 4K HDR media format this year, including Ghostbusters, The Seven Samurai and Lawrence of Arabia.
The 30th anniversary edition of Labyrinth will be available from September 30th, 2016, although it is not available on the Amazon UK store at present.
What Is Ultra HD Blu-ray?
Ultra HD Blu-ray is a next-generation Blu-ray Disc standard that supports 4K.
It goes beyond 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) by supporting HDR to achieve true-to-life 4K image reproduction with high frame rates of up to 60p and a brightness range of up to 1,000 to 10,000 nits as well as the BT.2020 wide colour gamut to further enhance colour reproduction.
