Control4 powers whole-home transformation at Newport Coast luxury residence

A 5,200-square-foot residence in Newport Coast, California, has been transformed into a fully integrated smart home environment combining immersive entertainment, whole-home audio, intelligent lighting and advanced security.

The project was designed and installed by technology integration specialists Daisy Orange County, with multiple systems seamlessly integrated onto the Control4 platform from ADI.

Originally approached to upgrade the residence’s home theatre, Daisy Orange County soon identified an opportunity to modernise much of the property’s existing infrastructure. Working closely with the homeowner and the project’s builder, Wyss Construction, the integrator replaced outdated automation, lighting and audio components with a cohesive smart home platform built around the Control4 automation system.

“The client came to us with a very specific idea of what they wanted to create, a home theatre,” says Steve Stary, General Manager and Co-founder of Daisy Orange County. “But as they worked through the discovery process with our design team, they developed a much broader understanding of how their entire home’s environment could be enhanced through properly curated technology. That’s where our process really shows its value.

“We’re not selling products, we’re helping clients see what’s possible. By the end of those early conversations, the goal had evolved from a single room into a fully integrated environment where lighting, entertainment, comfort and security all work together seamlessly; sophisticated in what it delivers, effortless in how the family experiences it.”

At the centre of the new installation is an upgraded and redesigned media room, originally the home’s existing theatre, now capable of transforming between two distinct viewing environments. The homeowner wanted a dedicated cinema experience for movie nights while also maintaining a brighter, more relaxed space for everyday viewing. The room was therefore conceived as a dual-purpose environment capable of switching instantly between these two modes.

Utilising the Control4 automation platform from ADI, Daisy Orange County created a flexible entertainment space that can transition seamlessly between these modes. With a single command from a Control4 Halo remote or T4 touchscreen, a 150-inch Screen Innovations projection screen retracts into the ceiling to reveal an 85-inch Samsung Frame television mounted behind it.

At the same time, lighting levels adjust automatically and Lutron Triathlon motorised shades rise to introduce natural light, allowing the room to transition from a dark theater environment into a comfortable everyday media space.

Behind the scenes, a Control4 CORE3 Entertainment and Automation Controller orchestrates the entire sequence, while a high-performance audio system featuring Focal in-wall speakers, JL Audio subwoofers and Triad amplification deliver immersive surround sound. The media room transformation was completed in just 10 days.

“The homeowner wanted the full cinematic impact of a dedicated theatre alongside the flexibility to use the room for casual viewing and family time,” notes Steve. “Those are two very different experiences, and most homes force you to choose. Our work is about removing that compromise and designing spaces that adapt to how a family actually lives, not the other way around.”

Mario Najar, Project Manager at Daisy Orange County, led the integration on-site. “Bringing projection, display, lighting, shading and audio together under one platform takes careful sequencing. Every system has to respond on cue, and the transitions have to feel instant,” he says. “When it all comes together, you get a room that genuinely behaves like two different spaces and the homeowner never has to think about the technology making it happen.”

Encouraged by the success of the theatre installation, the homeowners chose to extend the technology upgrade throughout the rest of the residence. Daisy Orange County replaced aging lighting keypads with sleek Control4 dimmers and keypads as part of a fully integrated Control4 lighting system that complements the home’s contemporary interior design while enabling customised lighting scenes tailored to the family’s daily routines.

Whole-home audio was introduced using Sonance Invisible Series speakers, allowing music to be distributed throughout the residence without visible hardware disrupting the interior aesthetic. Installing the speakers required close coordination with the builder to ensure the finished surfaces remained flawless.

Mario emphasises that preserving the home’s interior design was a guiding constraint throughout the installation. “One of the homeowner’s priorities was protecting the clean lines and visual simplicity of the interior design,” Mario says.

“The invisible speakers the client selected let us deliver high-quality audio throughout the home while keeping the technology completely hidden. But achieving that result came down to close coordination with Wyss Construction. Every speaker location had to be planned, framed and finished in lockstep with the trades, so the walls and ceilings read as untouched.”

Additional entertainment and security technologies were also integrated throughout the property. Alongside the 85-inch Samsung The Frame display in the media room, another Samsung The Frame television was installed in the family room, creating a second flexible entertainment space. Outdoor living areas were also enhanced with Episode ES-500 outdoor speakers.

Security and access control were upgraded with the addition of a Control4 DS2 video door station, Yale smart locks and a Qolsys alarm system. Luma surveillance cameras provide monitoring across the property, with all systems unified through the Control4 automation ecosystem.

Supporting infrastructure includes WattBox IP power management — another ADI brand — and a Ubiquiti Wi-Fi network to ensure reliable connectivity throughout the home.

Because the project coincided with a broader interior renovation, Daisy Orange County worked closely with Wyss Construction throughout the installation process. Early collaboration ensured that technology systems could be integrated without compromising the architectural vision of the project.

The completed installation brings together automation, lighting, audio, entertainment and security systems into a single integrated environment designed to enhance the homeowner’s daily living experience. Through the Control4 platform, Daisy Orange County can also provide ongoing support via remote monitoring and software updates, enabled through OvrC remote management, ensuring the system continues to evolve alongside the family’s needs.

“Projects like this demonstrate how integrators can combine multiple technologies into a unified experience for the homeowner,” says ADI Sr. Director of Product Management, Eric Fritz, “Through ADI’s portfolio of smart home, security and AV solutions, integrators have access to a broad ecosystem of interoperable products that allow them to design sophisticated environments while delivering reliability, performance and long-term value for homeowners.”
