Jordan O'BrienNest may be expanding its product line-up with new offerings such as a door bell, door lock, temperature sensors, and a security system, but it appears that the UK will be left without at least one of these additions for the time being.
Speaking to The Ambient, Nest’s Lionel Guicherd-Callin confirmed that it’s unlikely that the Nest Secure will launch in the UK until 2019 at the earliest. He noted that the firm is working on partnerships with security firms, while it also had to find a cellular partner to offer a back-up when the Wi-Fi goes down.
Despite Guicherd-Callin’s comments, the Google-owned company could still offer the standard Nest Secure in the UK, as it doesn’t necessarily need either a security firm or cellular support. In the US, those two extras are optional – and available for a supplementary fee. Nest doesn’t want UK customers to miss out on these crucial features, however. They’re also helpful revenue generators for the smart home firm.
The Nest Secure has been available in the US since late 2017, where it has had to compete with options from both Ring and ADT. There are fewer options this side of the pond, however. Both the Ring Alarm and ADT’s smart Pulse system are unavailable in either the UK or Europe, meaning the UK is desperate for a smart security system.
No Temperature Sensor
While the Nest Secure will eventually make its way across the Atlantic, the firm has no intention to launch its temperature sensors in the UK or Europe. It’s not too surprising to see the firm take this stance, as the two regions use completely different heating set-ups. It could have found a workaround, however. Hive, Tado and Ecobee have managed to offer multi-zonal heating despite the hurdles.
It’s not all bad news for Nest customers outside of North America, however. The Google-owned manufacturer has announced that the Nest Hello, a smart door bell, will be coming to the UK very soon, hoping to take on the Amazon-owned Ring at its own game. It’s unlikely that the Nest x Yale smart lock will be making a similar jump, however. After all, we’re still waiting for the Assa Abloy-owned August smart lock to launch in this market…
