The Amazon Echo was a smash hit piece of hardware, having sold millions of units in both the US and the UK. Despite its success, the retail giant is showing no signs of slowing down, with the company reportedly planning a Nest Cam competitor, complete with Alexa functionality.
A leaked picture, courtesy of AFTVNews, appears to show a home security camera with a design not too dissimilar to all of the other home security cameras that have flooded the market. There are a few unique design elements included in Amazon’s supposed security camera, however. That includes the familiar blue ring, which users will recognise as having come straight from the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot.
At the top of the device, two distinct holes can be seen. While it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely that those holes act as microphones to enable the Alexa functionality that Amazon has been so keen to add to literally every product on the market.
As for the camera itself, it doesn’t look like there’s anything particularly special about Amazon’s rumoured offering, when compared to the likes of the Nest Cam or Netatmo Welcome. There are four infrared LEDs surrounding the camera itself, meaning it’ll be capable of night vision, although that’s not exactly a new feature on these sort of cameras.
Amazon isn’t saying whether this camera is its next Alexa-enabled product, which is not entirely surprising. The image certainly looks legit though, and with security cameras still a hot trend in the smart home arena, it would be a natural step for Amazon to jump on the bandwagon.
