Pro-Ject Audio Systems has launched the Uni Box S3, an integrated amplifier with streaming technology powered by WiiM OS. Drawing on decades of expertise in analogue design, Pro-Ject has taken a different approach to typical streaming amplifiers; one that preserves the character of analogue sound by keeping the analogue signal path intact, while embracing the convenience of app-controlled streaming.
Where many streaming amplifiers convert all signals to digital, the Uni Box S3 keeps analogue sources analogue. That means a turntable, CD player or other line-level devices retain their original, lifelike sonic character. Built around the same dual-mono architecture as Pro-Ject’s MaiA S3, the Uni Box S3 delivers 40 watts per channel into 4 ohms.
The backbone of the Uni Box S3’s streaming smarts is handled by WiiM OS, which includes support for Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz and TuneIn. A Cirrus Logic DAC handles playback up to 24-bit/192kHz.
Control comes via the new Pro-Ject Home app, which makes setup straightforward, supports multi-room playback with other future Pro-Ject devices and ets users stream connected analogue sources – like a turntable – to compatible devices elsewhere in a home.
The Uni Box S3 includes a moving magnet phono stage, analogue volume control via a motorised potentiometer and a dedicated headphone amp with a full-size 6.3mm output.
Inputs cover three analogue (including phono), three digital (optical and coaxial), HDMI eARC for TV audio and wireless via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.1. Outputs include gold-plated speaker terminals and a variable RCA output for subwoofers or second zones.
Not only does the Uni Box S3 preserve the character of analogue sound, but it is also designed with sustainability in mind. Its compact design uses significantly less aluminium than conventional amplifiers, reducing material use and enabling more efficient transport.
By separating the analogue amplifier from the streaming module, the Uni Box S3 ensures that even if streaming technology evolves or becomes obsolete, the amplifier will continue to perform as a high-quality analogue system.
The Pro-Ject Uni Box S3, housed in its aluminium chassis, is built in Europe and available now in silver or black. Pricing is £699.00 and €799. Henley Audio exclusively distributes Pro-Ject in the UK.
