Fyne Audio has launched its new S-Trax SuperTweeter, bringing all the benefits of the brand’s SuperTrax omni-direction UHF technology into a more compact, affordable and universally compatible form.
Created for audiophiles looking to extract the very best possible sound from the loudspeakers, S-Trax is engineered to broaden frequency response “far beyond the limits of human hearing” while ensuring integration with a wide range of systems.
With a simplified enclosure and finish, and fewer esoteric components than its flagship stablemate, S-Trax continues to deliver a greater sense of realism, detail and musical engagement at a more accessible price.
At the heart of the design is an upward-facing 25 mm magnesium dome driven by a neodymium magnet system. Unique to Fyne Audio, the tweeter is perfectly aligned with a Tractrix profile diffuser above, radiating HF energy into the room in a uniform 360-degree pattern.
This better replicates the sound dispersion of real instruments, rather than the narrowly focused HF ‘beam’ of a forward-facing tweeter. The design extends the system’s frequency response to over 50kHz (-6dB in room), enhancing the transient response, spaciousness and textural detailing of the reproduced music without altering the underlying tonal balance of the system.
When carefully positioned to align with the acoustic centre of Fyne Audio’s IsoFlare driver or the tweeter on a typical discrete speaker system, the S-Trax also reduces high-frequency phase errors, ensuring a more coherent and transparent sound. The phase relationship of instruments within the audio band is delivered with greater accuracy, with S-Trax adding back high-frequency harmonic information that is otherwise missing and improving the timbre of the reproduced music.
To ensure compatibility with the widest range of loudspeakers, Fyne has engineered a 3rd-order high-pass crossover set at 16 kHz. S-Trax operates purely in the super-high frequency domain, with a ± 4.5dB of fine-tuning gain to complement rather than compete with the speaker’s own tweeter. Built at Fyne’s new Glasgow factory, the S-Trax also benefits from Fyne’s proprietary in-house Deep Cryogenic Treatment to minimise micro-distortions and preserve signal purity throughout the design’s conductive components.
Measuring just 79 × 82 × 149mm and weighing approximately 1kg, the S-Trax is designed to sit discreetly on top of virtually any flat-topped loudspeaker. Its compact cabinet, finished in understated satin black throughout, makes integration visually unobtrusive. The recommended amplifier power handling of up to 300 W RMS makes it suitable for use with everything from compact stand-mounts to larger floorstanders. The unit is fitted with Fyne’s anti-RFI grounding terminal to ensure that minute details are not masked by electromagnetic interference from nearby electronics.
