PPDS has achieved a new sustainability milestone with its Philips Signage EcoDesign becoming the first digital display to be awarded EPEAT Climate+ Gold certification.

Continuing PPDS’ ambitions for a more sustainable AV industry, the ultra-energy-efficient 50in Philips Signage 3650 EcoDesign QE-Line display – which uses 50% less power than comparable 4K Ultra HD digital signage models – has been officially certified as meeting the highest criteria for sustainability leadership in electronics.

PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips Professional Displays and complementary solutions, has announced that its ultra-low-power 50in Philips Signage 3650 EcoDesign has become the first digital signage display to be awarded EPEAT Climate+ Gold designation with more models set to follow.

Launched at ISE 2023, the Philips Signage 3000 Series EcoDesign is PPDS’ first digital signage range developed using its EcoDesign methodology implementing new manufacturing processes, materials, packaging and built-in software to reduce environmental impact and improve energy efficiency.

Delivering high-impact 4K performance while consuming 50% less energy than comparable premium digital signage models, the Philips Signage 3000 Series EcoDesign has already received some of the industry’s lowest energy label ratings (E for the 50in model, D for the 55in and C for the 65in) and was initially awarded an EPEAT Climate+ Silver designation.

Founded in 2006, EPEAT is a global eco-label for electronics assessing products based on their environmental and social impact from extraction to end-of-life. To achieve Gold certification, products must meet 100% of the Climate Criteria plus at least 50% of the optional criteria which include:

  • Climate: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain and product use.
  • Circularity: Designing products for reuse and recycling with responsible packaging, water and waste management.
  • Chemicals of concern: Eliminating hazardous substances.
  • Responsible supply chains: Ensuring fair labour practices and worker safety.

EPEAT is operated by the Global Electronics Council (GEC) a non-profit organisation promoting sustainable electronics through its free online registry helping buyers make informed decisions.

As a recognised leader in sustainable AV solutions, PPDS has integrated the latest energy-efficient technologies and packaging designs into the Philips Signage 3000 EcoDesign range. With the 55in and 65in models set to follow, the 50in model already meets the most stringent sustainability criteria in electronics.

Bart Wouters, International Product Manager at PPDS, comments, “At PPDS the environment and sustainability are at the core for our product development from the initial designs right the way through to manufacturing, delivery and post installation. With the Philips Signage 3000 EcoDesign Series we achieve a major industry milestone in gaining EPEAT Climate+ Silver. As with all our products we continue in our pursuit for more. And now this groundbreaking product achieves even better with EPEAT Climate+ Gold.”

PPDS continues to innovate with a strategy focused on reducing waste. The Philips Signage 3000 Series EcoDesign packaging is made from 90% recycled and 100% recyclable materials with plastic bags removed and polystyrene replaced with 100% recycled carton cushioning.

The Philips 3000 Series EcoDesign, part of PPDS’ growing Android SoC family, can be managed manually or remotely via third-party software or PPDS’ in-house solutions including the Philips Wave remote device management ecosystem.

Andrea Barbuti, Global Product Management Lead for EMEA at PPDS, adds, “The scrutiny of our products for their sustainability features doesn’t end when we launch a new display. That is still very much the beginning. Tracking the performance of a range, checking the product life cycle and working for better and more. It is all very much on our radar. With Android SoC we strive to update and enhance at every opportunity and as we unearth innovations and methodologies to help enhance performance and energy efficiencies we work to include these in our existing models as well as our brand new ones.

“We are immensely proud the 50in Philips Signage 3650 EcoDesign has been recognised with EPEAT Climate+ Gold certification. My thanks and congratulations go to our full team for the continued hard work in setting new standards and striving for a brighter and more sustainable future in AV.”
