Despite Sony and Sky signing a pan-European deal earlier in 2016 offering customers exclusive Sony Pictures in 4K available for viewing just months after they have been released in cinemas, it seems that certain Sony 4K TVs don’t yet work with Sky Q when playing UHD.
Frustrated users have been quick to take to Twitter to voice their concerns, with Sky Q acknowledging on its website that the company is indeed experiencing picture problems with Ultra HD and Sony TVs.
It seems that if you’re using a Sony TV with a Sky Q Silver box and have enabled Ultra HD settings, the user may experience an issue with the picture. Sky and Sony state that they are currently working together to investigate this issue.
Sony TV models that are currently affected are:
- X94C/X93C/X91C/X90C/S85C/S80C/X85C/X83C/X80C series (2015 production)
- XD94/XD93/XD85/SD85 series (2016 production)
If a user’s model number is listed above, or if someone is experiencing a similar problem, they are advised to try the following:
- Putting the TV in standby mode by using the standby button on the Sky Q remote.
- Wait five seconds, then turn the TV back on.
- Selecting a different TV source from the input list on the TV.
Sony has also been quick to acknowledge the issue after noticing that many users were experiencing juddering images when watching 2160p (4K) output from UHD Set-top boxes via HDMI.
“The 4K image displayed through your UHD Set-top box (STB) may be experiencing a slight juddering sensation, after the TV is switched on from standby mode,” says Sony Europe.
If this symptom is apparent, users are advised to try the following solutions:
Option 1: To easily eliminate the video judder that may be seen after a long standby period, put the TV IN and OUT of standby mode for approximately five seconds (using the green power button on the remote control).
Option 2: If you wish to completely remove the video judder (until a software update corrects the issue), set the STB output as HD (1080i or 1080p).
If you have a Sky Q STB, users can change the settings by going to:
[Settings] > [Set-up] > [Audio visual] > [Picture resolution] > Select the relevant 1080 output.Sony states that the issue will be resolved via a future software update.
