In aid of charity, Sonos has announced a limited edition Play:5 speaker themed to the Beastie Boys. All proceeds from the sales of this limited run speaker will go to Peace Sisters, an organisation that helps expand education to underprivileged women in Africa, and Little Kids Rock, a group that brings music education to underserved schoolchildren in the United States.
The Sonos Play:5 Beastie Boys Edition will debut during Beastie Boys Book: Live & Direct tour that kicks off in New York City on October 29, with shows in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London, UK. The limited edition speaker features a new grille design from Barry McGee, a San Francisco artist, although that’s the only change you’ll see from this speaker. Everything under the hood is the same.
So, you may be wondering, why a Beastie Boys special edition? Well, according to Sonos’ global head of music, Brian Beck, “It’s no coincidence that the first song ever played out loud on a Sonos was ‘No Sleep till Brooklyn’. Beastie Boys are a revered and inspirational force in music, with a legacy we are incredibly grateful to support through this exclusive collaboration, celebrating the work and philosophies we respect enormously.”
Well, if the Sonos Play:5 Beastie Boys Edition tickles your fancy, the company has announced that it will be available in the US and in select markets around the globe from December 2018. The price has remained identical to the standard Play:5, meaning this limited edition model is $499; with all the proceeds going directly to charity.
