AliceCinema specialist FAB Audio Visual recently donated and installed a home cinema room to the Keech Hospice Teenagers’ Day room in Luton, which came about after a chance meeting at a Chamber of Commerce event in St Albans that set the wheels in motion.
The directors at FAB AV had been looking to give something back for a while. A Keech hospice fundraiser informed FAB AV that the hospice was in the process of having an extension built, incorporating a new teenagers day room.
The team at FAB saw the opportunity they had been looking for and offered to donate and install an automated cinema experience into the new room.
After a site visit, a busy afternoon was spent on the phone to various suppliers asking for their help in the creation of the room. With numerous promises of AV products to be donated the, project quickly took shape.
FAB AV installed the in-ceiling screen, in-wall speakers and in-wall sub-woofer into the hospice.
Anthem AV Solutions donated a MRX 500 surround sound receiver, while Monitor Audio supplied an in-wall subwoofer and amplifier, three WT380-IDC in-wall speakers and two CT380IDC in-ceiling speakers.
Next to be installed was a Helvar Ltd lighting control system including 920 lighting router and keypads, which controls the DALI light fittings allowing for presence detection, day light harvesting and mood setting.
DMX commands were used to control the colour changing LED strip hidden in the ceiling features.
Also donated was a JVC HD projector and a remote control system and T1b+ & XP6 processor from Invision UK.
A lockable cabinet houses the surround sound receiver, the Freeview TV box, an Oppo BD103 Blu-ray player, the RTI remote control processor, an X-Box and a Playstation.
“The unit nurses and visitors have been impressed by the simplicity of the control, only needing to press one button on the remote if the kids want to watch TV, a movie or play on the X-Box or PS3,” says FAB AV.
“When the respective button is pressed the screen lowers from a trapdoor in the ceiling, the projector turns on, the AV equipment in the cabinet comes to life, the lights dim and the electric blinds drop smoothly into position. When finished the ‘off’ button is pressed and the blinds open, the screen rolls back into the ceiling, the lights come on and all the electronics switch off.”
The new unit was opened officially at the end of March by Harry Judd from supergroup McBusted.
