Deeper, More Immersive Audio From Ascendo’s Super-Slim Infrasonic Sub

UK AV distributor Karma-AV is enriching its range of home cinema design options with a new planar subwoofer from Ascendo Immersive Audio.

At just 30cm deep, ‘The 28 Sub Pro Squared’ is a slender 28in passive sealed subwoofer, which delivers the highest output while occupying minimal space, making it perfect for even the most space-conscious home theatre projects, says the product’s supplier.

Following a discussion with Trinnov CEO Arnaud Laborie and after extensive research and experimentation, Ascendo has developed and deployed a 28in composite sandwich flat panel cone for ‘The 28 Sub Pro Squared’, built from multiple layers of rohacell and with the cone area equivalent to a 32in round subwoofer.

The company has endowed the innovative driver’s motor structure with the engineered muscle needed for the rapid acceleration of the cone, motor mass, and coupled air mass. The design results in a subwoofer that produces a perfect planar wave front, with high efficiency, ultra-high-power handling, and very low system Q. The shallow roll-off, combined with ultra-dynamic response, means that every sound from the new design hits with native speed, attack and impact says the maker.

Having an overall depth of just 30 cm, ‘The 28 Sub Pro Squared’ will prove to be versatile and easy to integrate into any home theatre system. Intended for baffle wall or free-standing applications, behind fabric or screen, its innovative construction allows for woofers to be spaced very closely together, achieving strong coupling for bass array systems with control up to 120Hz.

In clusters for a shallow, wide and high wall of bass and ideal for integration with Trinnov WaveForming and Dirac Active Room Treatment (ART), ‘The 28 Sub Pro Squared’ is capable of reproducing single-digit infrasonic frequencies, yet can also soar well above the LFE cutoff frequency of 120Hz to serve as the ultimate kick woofer.

From a compact design – outside dimensions of 80 cm wide and 100 cm high – the new Ascendo subwoofer is described as a powerhouse of sound in a surprisingly versatile package. The maker argues it is the perfect fit even for challenging installations and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in low-frequency sound reproduction.
