Prove your humanity

In today’s smart homes, where immersive entertainment and intelligent automation are expected as standard, it’s easy to overlook the infrastructure that makes it all possible. At Chord Company, since 1985, we’ve believed that cables and connections are not just supporting players—they’re the foundation of performance. Whether it’s delivering pristine audio, razor-sharp video, or reliable control signals, the quality of the connection defines the experience. Doug Maxwell, Chord Company Sales Director, explores the topic…

The AV and smart home sectors have evolved dramatically. Installations now demand high-bandwidth infrastructure for 4K/8K video and multi-room audio.  As systems become more sophisticated, so too must the cabling that supports them.

One of the most noticeable trends in both hi-fi and home cinema is the rising popularity of subwoofers. From compact living rooms to full-blown media suites, consumers are demanding visceral, room-filling yet natural bass that optimises both music and movies. But delivering that performance requires more than just a powerful sub—it demands the right cable.

At Chord Company, we’ve seen firsthand how dedicated high-level subwoofer cables can transform a system. Unlike standard RCA runs, high-level connections allow the subwoofer to mirror the amplifier’s output more accurately, preserving timing and dynamics. Our subwoofer cables are engineered with high-purity conductors for low-frequency clarity, advanced shielding to eliminate hum and interference, plus robust terminations to ensure long-term reliability.

Whether integrating a sub into a stereo system or anchoring the LFE channel in a Dolby Atmos set-up, the right cable ensures the bass is not just heard—but felt.

Our commitment to signal integrity has led us to develop proprietary technologies across our ranges. One standout is our Leyline speaker cable series, which has been designed specifically to meet the demands of high-end installers.

Originally conceived during the rise of whole-home AV systems, Leyline cables were built to handle long runs without compromising performance. The latest Leyline2X and Leyline2XL models feature tin-plated stranded OFC conductors to prevent oxidisation and maintain high-frequency detail over distance, XLPE insulation for phase stability and reduced signal loss, plus, twisted pair geometry to cancel out electromagnetic interference; there are also low-smoke, zero-halogen jackets for safety and compliance.

Supplied in metre-marked, easy-pull boxes and CPR-rated for fire safety, Leyline cables are a favourite among installers who value both performance and practicality.

HDMI remains the backbone of AV connectivity, and the standards are evolving fast. With HDMI 2.1b already supporting 48 Gbps bandwidth, 8K resolution, and 120 Hz refresh rates, the upcoming HDMI 2.2 specification promises even more: higher bandwidth, faster refresh rates, and support for future formats like 16K and dynamic HDR.

We design our HDMI cables to not only meet current standards, but to anticipate future demand. This means precision-engineered conductors for high-speed data integrity, multi-layer shielding, to prevent crosstalk and EMI and, of course, robust construction for long-term reliability in concealed installations.

Installers should be aware that while HDMI 2.2 will be backward compatible, it will require new cable designs to fully support its capabilities. Our development roadmap ensures that our HDMI offerings will continue to deliver uncompromising performance as standards evolve.

Premium cables deserve premium installation techniques. We recommend: segregating signal and power to reduce interference; using structured cable trays and conduits for protection and future-proofing; documenting cable run for easier maintenance and upgrades, plus planning for scalability with slack and modular pathways.

As smart homes become more integrated, the role of cabling will only grow in importance. Installers must navigate increasing complexity of systems and protocols, client expectations for invisible infrastructure and flawless performance, plus Sustainability in materials and energy-efficient design.

Yet, with these challenges come opportunities—to educate clients, differentiate through craftsmanship, and future-proof homes for the next wave of innovation.

Cables may be hidden, but their impact is anything but invisible. As manufacturers, we’re proud to support installers with products that combine technical excellence, practical design, and long-term reliability. For those shaping the smart homes of tomorrow, the message is clear: take care of the connections, and the performance will follow.
