Old Vic Gets A New Flick

AV Comm was commissioned to install a dedicated home cinema within a Victorian townhouse, as part of the city centre Renaissance Development in Glasgow.

Interior designers and architectural service company, Detail, designed the luxury accommodation with minimal equipment to be visible.

The cinema, set on a new purpose-built mezzanine floor, needed to be stylish, but also deliver strong audio and image quality.

Glasgow-based AV Comm installed an Optoma UHD65 4K UHD projector together with a Cyberscreen Acoustically Transparent 120in fixed projection screen supplied by IntoAV Distribution.

Allan Staig from AV Comm, says, “We had the challenge of ensuring the home cinema was in keeping with this stylish luxury development while still within budget.

“We chose the UHD65 because it provided the best image quality and value for money.  Although this is a luxury development, the customer is very cost conscious. It was the only 4K UHD projector at this price bracket that could achieve the image quality that we needed.”

With the full 8.3 million on-screen pixels, Optoma points out the UHD65 meets the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) requirements for 4K UHD and complies with the CTA High Dynamic Range (HDR) compatible display standards.

Also on-board is PureMotion frame-interpolation technology which is designed to reduce motion blur or image judder, even in high-speed action films or fast-paced sports.

Optoma argues that with an RGBRGB colour wheel providing accurate, true to life colour, coupled with the machine’s black casing and its 1,200,000:1 contrast ratio, the beamer is a strong choice for dedicated home cinemas.

The machine was created to be simple to set up with vertical lens shift and a choice of connection options such as two HDMI ports and Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) for compatible phones and tablets. In addition, the UHD65 can be turned into a smart projector by connecting an HDMI dongle like the Google Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV to access media services and stream TV shows, films and video clips, play games and share photos.

Monitor Audio’s Controlled Performance 7.2.4 in wall speaker system was installed to provide the audio quality all concealed either behind the screen or by acoustically transparent wall treatments. This attractive stretched fabric material was supplied by specialists Desmond and Sons, a company with a long history in the area of specialist wall treatments for cinemas and studios.

Completing the cinema was a Denon Dolby Atmos enabled AVR, Samsung UHD Blu-ray player, Apple TV 4K, Sky+ HD Box and a URC  7100 Total Control table top touch screen control system.

Allan concludes, “The owner is a real movie fan and was over the moon with his dedicated home cinema. This is one of the best that we have installed both aesthetically and in terms of sound and image quality. It is even better than I thought it would be.  We will be specifying the UHD65 into more cinema installations in the coming months.”
