Artcoustic and New Wave AV Hit The Heights

Artcoustic speakers provide the backbone of the cinema

This attractive and high-performance cinema was part of a whole house project recently highlighted by speaker brand Artcousitc as one of the most impressive installs to come through in recent months receiving its Installation of the Month accolade for September.

Angus Murray, Projects Director at New Wave AV, explains, “The project was introduced to us by an interior designer who we had recently worked with. The original brief was a whole home system incorporating multi-room audio, multi-room video, lighting control, HVAC integration, intercom, intruder & CCTV, network and of course the Dolby Atmos enabled cinema room. The brief for the cinema room (4K, 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos) did not change apart from the screen update that came out of the design process.”

Angus continues, “The interior designer came to our Experience Centre and was very impressed with the performance of our Artcoustic media room. We therefore built the cinema specification around the Spitfire range of speakers. Anthem AV was chosen due to the power of the ARC Anthem Room Correction, which we have used on a number of projects.

“The client is a big film fan and when he experienced the simplicity and performance of the Kaleidescape Strato Media Server, it was a must have part of the solution. Control4 was then chosen to ensure simplicity of control within the cinema room, this was used to control all the AV elements as well as the lighting and HVAC.

Getting the cinema performing right needed addressing a few technical challenges.

Angus explains, “The room is long and not very wide. The client’s focus was film which meant that a 2.35:1 screen was specified but this reduced height caused some technical issues with vertical shift on the projector. The originally specified screen was therefore updated to the Display Technologies Micro Bezel Screen because the increase in visible screen height (within the same overall size) allowed the vertical shift to work whilst maintaining the correct height for the screen.”

Angus adds, “As a movie fan the client’s favourite part is the pure video and audio performance of the room. The fully uncompressed content delivered to the room by the Kaleidescape looks and sounds amazing. Our favourite design feature is the backlit floating acoustic panels that were custom made to give a 20mm shadow gap all around each panel.”

As for the rest of this impressive install project, the team delivered multi room audio into 20 spaces including three surround sound rooms. There is also a very cool, Triad 8.1 Landscape audio solution in the garden and a media room which features a drop down JVC DLA NX9 projector (via custom Future Automation drop), Projecta drop down tensioned screen and Triad in-ceiling rotating silver speakers (with integrated laser to allow correct positioning).

There is also video distribution into six rooms, Control4 lighting control into all primary rooms and Silent Gliss Electric curtains in the main reception rooms and bedrooms all integrated into the Control4 system.

The automation system also controls the UFH and AV systems, CCTV, intruder alarm, intercom and gate control. The home also has its own fully loaded wired networking and managed Wi-Fi system.
