Carl-Fredrik Malmgren from award winning Swedish AV and installation company, Fremlab, takes on our Q&A challenge.
What are you up to today?
We are doing a conference and gala award dinner for finance company Resurs Bank, 500 guests in a sports stadium. Light, sound, LED, stage – the whole package
How and why did you pursue a career in the AV/Install industry?
Like many others, I started as a DJ 1977, then in 1982 – still in school – formed a small company doing light and sound. During the years we have changed focus and left club/rock-n-roll for more corporate and AV solutions in hotels, churches etc. Hire has also changed towards corporate functions. Like the one we’re doing today.
What project are you most proud of in your career and why?
Our largest and most ‘attention and written about’ is the Helsingborg Arena. We got two awards for that project, Crestron Integration Awards at ISE 2013 and also InAVation Awards 2014 ‘Most InAVative Leisure & Entertainment Facility’. Both these prizes were the first time any Swedish company had won. No one can take that away from me. Best job satisfaction is when a gig is over and client says ‘Damn, that was good’.
What is the worst thing (outside of your control) that has ever gone wrong on a project?
As an installer, what is one thing you’re tired of hearing either on the job, or about your job?
Hmm, really nothing. If we are short of time then we do not need to hear ‘Are you done soon?’
What one thing could the industry collectively do to improve its standing and profitability?
Not bidding too low on projects. We very seldom bid on projects, most projects clients ask us just to do a project – with an estimated cost. As long you are honest, final cost is close to estimated and declare all costs I do not see a problem.
What is your favourite piece of AV kit on the market right now?
Like a tool or a product or what?
I wish there was an tool that measures the signal strength in various lines like HDMI, SDI same as you can measure an CAT cable. This tool maybe exist? Then someone tell me…
What product/s or concepts do you think will be the next big thing in the industry?
Dante is here to stay, so when Dante mk2 comes including picture and all is back compatible, then we have solved a lot of problems! Another product I wish was available is the ‘superstagebox’. I mean a stagebox with a number of SDI, HDMI, XLR, DMX, CAT etc etc, then a 300m super-duper fibre between to FOH with all connectors there again. All lines selectable either way, again, we also solve a lot of problems!
You can invite three people living or dead out for a pint or over for dinner (not including family and friends!) Who are they and why?
Tina Charles – the lady behind I’m on Fire, that was my first played track as a DJ 1976, and then made hooked on this business.
John Travolta, the movie Saturday Night Fever from 1977 made big impression on me and Trammps Disco Inferno I always play when DJing
Barak Obama – the best president so far that really made an impact on the world, I could fancy having a pint with him!
You can only listen to one album and watch one film for the rest of your life, what are they?
Album: Dark side of the moon – Pink Floyd
Movie: Saturday Night Fever
Do you have any hidden talents?
I am still a DJ and can say I am good at reading the audience knowing what to play.
