Lionsgate’s next two IMAX releases will be The Divergent Series: Allegiant and Deepwater Horizon; both of which will debut in IMAX cinemas around the world upon their release.

This is the latest agreement signed between Lionsgate and IMAX, following on from the upcoming release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, which is set to hit theatres next week.

Divergent may not have the same cult following as The Hunger Games franchise, but it has been Lionsgate’s most successful franchise since Katniss Everdeen launched onto screens.

Divergent has managed to gross over $600m (£400m) worldwide since its release. Allegiant is set to be the penultimate film in the franchise, currently scheduled for a March 2016 release, with Ascendant set to follow in 2017.

Deepwater Horizon, director Peter Berg’s action-drama starring Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg and based on the 2010 oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, will begin its roll-out on September 30, 2016.

“Lionsgate has had a great relationship with IMAX and we are very pleased to be working with them again on two of our tentpole movies, Allegiant and Deepwater Horizon,” says Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairmen, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

“The IMAX format truly maximizes the impact of watching these visually moving films and gives the audience an exceptional viewing experience.”

“With the iconic franchises of The Hunger Games, Twilight and The Divergent Series, IMAX and Lionsgate boast a strong tradition of providing popular cinema in the most immersive way possible,” adds Greg Foster, senior executive vice president, IMAX Corp and CEO of IMAX Entertainment.

“We are excited to continue that legacy with these two upcoming films – The Divergent Series: Allegiant and Deepwater Horizon, the latter of which aligns with our history of bringing awareness to key environmental issues.

“Our mandate is to provide compelling cinema 52 weeks a year and we believe these films are strong additions in achieving that goal.”

The IMAX release of each film will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology.
